The Uninvited

Hey, all you scary/thriller movie fans. Here is a film to put on the list of things to watch ASAP.  The Uninvited is a film that was released in 2009 by the same makers of The Ring and Disturbia, so you know it’s in good company.  It has a good cast including Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, David Strathairn, and Elizabeth Banks.

The Uninvited is the scary story of a girl named Anna who is released from a mental hospital after being put in because she broke down due to the mysterious death of her mother.  She returns to her home to find her older sister, Alex, and her father with his new, peculiar fiance.  As they start to research this lady’s history, they start to unearth some things that are quite interesting.  Anna finds herself having ghostly encounters, and some very creepy and suspenseful dreams mixing what is real, and what isn’t. If you liked the two aforementioned films, you’ll no doubt enjoy every second of this one.  The more they figure out, the scarier it gets…for them, AND for the viewer.

On a scale from 1 to 10, it definitely scores a 7 as thriller, but scores a 9 for an ending that will blow your mind…leaving you speechless, breathless, and tingling.  Bet you can’t watch it in the dark…by yourself!

Be somewhat wary, this film is rated PG-13 for violent, language including sexual references, nudity and some drug use.

One Day…you’ll wish it lasted longer.

One Day made me giddy with anticipation, scream with frustration and sigh with contentment all within a matter of pages.

This recent British import is one of the best books I have read in years.   I couldn’t believe how quickly I became engrossed in the narrative and attached to the characters.  It is a fast-paced page turner but I occasionally found myself putting the book down because I didn’t think I could handle what might happen next. By creating realistically complex individuals and relationships, David Nicholls takes you on an emotional roller coaster from the first page.

In this brilliantly constructed novel, the story progresses (and occasionally regresses) by giving the reader a snapshot into the lives of the characters on July 15th of every year.  We first meet Dexter and Emma right after they have graduated from college.  She is full of ambitions and ideals; he is hoping to avoid any responsibility for as long as possible.  Some years the characters spend St. Swithun’s Day (July 15th) together, some years they correspond from a distance and some years they are trying to forget the other exists.  Over the next 20 years Em and Dex face the reality of career and love disappointments while battling to define their own tenuous relationship.

Into the Wild Nerd Yonder by Julie Halpern

To nerd, or not to nerd, that is the question. Well, at least, it is for high school sophomore, Jessie. Jessie’s been part of a trio of friends all her life, but when her two besties, Bizza and Char, makeover their images – and their personalities – after spending time with Jessie’s older brother and his punk-rock band, Jessie is forced to find new friends. That’s when she receives an invitation from Dottie Bell, nerd queen of the school, to join her and her nerd herd in a night of Dungeons and Dragons. Jessie hesitantly accepts their offer, and she’s swept up into the wild nerd yonder. As she makes new friends and meets a dashing boy with blue eyes and curly hair, Jessie debates whether being a nerd is really as bad as they say and also what it means to have true friends.

Funny, fresh, and full of interesting and unique characters, Into the Wild Nerd Yonder portrays the complexities of high school cliques and the illusion of popularity, while staying light on its feet and never taking itself too seriously. Jessie’s voice is a breath of fresh air. She’s quirky, spunky, and encounters many problems that teenagers face in real life. This book might not be award-winning, but it’s a lot of fun and does a swell job of representing the nerd conundrum of high school.

Recommended for older teens, for some sexual talk and moderate language.

Everybody — Ingrid Michaelson

A few years back while watching an Old Navy commercial I heard Ingrid Michaelson’s hit, “The Way I Am”, and immediately fell in love with the sound of this singer/songwriter. I have seen Ingrid perform live a myriad of times and she proves her artistry as she sounds much better in person than on any CD track. She has amazing raw talent, unlike those “artists” who seem to use some sort of studio magic to create their album.

“Everybody”, Ingrid’s most recent album, is not one to miss.  I would classify her unique sound as a nice blend of folk and pop. Her lyricism is both smart and intuitive. This album is very quirky, her songs seem soothing and relaxing, yet at the same time are thought provoking and provide just enough depth. Michaelson’s songs have been featured on hit TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill,  Scrubs and Bones. Her sound is in the same spectrum as Regina Spektor or FEIST. Give her a listen, she will definitely leave you wanting more.

29 by Adena Halpern

Ellie Jerome is about to turn seventy-five – a “young seventy-five” as her daughter calls it.  The problem is, Ellie doesn’t want to be a “young seventy-five”, she wants to be young again. She looks at the life her granddaughter, Lucy, has with envy.  The late nights out, the boyfriend, the successful career in fashion. When presented with a cake full of candles, Ellie wishes that she could be twenty-nine again, for just one day.  She never expected THAT birthday wish to come true! So when she wakes up the next day with a perfect, wrinkle-free body and perfect vision, no one is more surprised than she is – except maybe Lucy.  Ellie finally has her chance to see what it’s like to be young again, to experience life the way her granddaughter does, and she’s going to live this one day for all it’s worth – boys, clubs, fashion and all!

29 is a light, easy read that investigates whether or not “youth is wasted on the young”.  The adventures of Ellie and Lucy are sure to make you smile and wonder what you would do if you had the chance to do it all again, even just for a day.

This book contains some talk of sex and some mild language.
