POD

PODPlace A Hold

Every summer, Hollywood comes out with at least one shock-and-awe blockbuster alien invasion movie meant to entertain, help us escape and make scads of money. Think Independence Day, Men in Black, or last summer’s Super 8. What if, instead of a movie, we had a blockbuster book about an alien invasion? POD, by Stephen Wallenfels, is just the ticket, I believe, to get us out of the dark theaters and onto our sofa, beach chair or wherever we want to buckle up for an incredible sci-fi ride.

POD stars two intrepid teens: one in Prosser, Washington and one stuck in an LA parking garage, who have to figure out how to stay alive as hostile alien ships infect the skies overhead. How will Josh and Megs survive on dwindling food and water supplies with no way to get more?

This page-turner will keep you glued to the edge of your seat, reading late into the night. Pass the popcorn!

Rated PG-13 for some violence and language.

SERIOUSLY… I’M KIDDING

Place a Hold

Seriously… I’m not kidding. This book is hilarious!

If you loved Tina Fey’s Bossypants, or Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? or any of Ellen’s other books, you have got to pick this one up.

It’s funny and lively, and  insightful at times. I listened to the audiobook that Ellen reads herself, which made it that much more entertaining.

A NEW SPIN ON SOME OLD TALES

Place a Hold

I am not a horror fan. However, I sometimes find myself looking for quick and creepy reads that are not too scary.  The children’s Graphic Spin series fits the bill.  With illustrations reminiscent of a Tim Burton movie, each book in the series remakes a fairy tale, such as Hansel and Gretel, into the truly menacing story it was originally meant to be.

Other books in the series include Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Ugly Duckling and Rumpelstiltskin.  For ages 9 and up.

THE SELECTION

The SelectionPlace A Hold

If The Hunger Games was a princess story, it would be like The Selection. In the future, a caste system has cropped up in the new regime where the United States once stood. A girl named America is drafted into a program called “The Selection”, where she will compete with 34 other girls for the hand of the prince in marriage.

I loved this book because America is a truly strong heroine who doesn’t buy into the competition she has been forced to take part in. Her story is heartfelt and riveting. I couldn’t put it down.

The Selection has some vague sexual themes and violence.
