For the Love of Bananas

Looking for a good book that combines bananas AND friends?  Well, I can recommend two:

Two wide-eyed monkeys, but only one banana.  Such is the dilemma in Ed Vere‘s new book, Banana!, where our protagonists must learn new ways of getting what they want.  This is a great read-a-loud book for young children, and can also be used as an easy-reader.  There are only two different words to learn and each repeats throughout the story.

The word “bananas” also appears in one of my favorite books, We Are In a Book, by Mo Willems.  Just try not to giggle as Piggie and Elephant, two of Willems’ stock easy-reader characters, connive a way to get both child and adult readers to say the word…bananas.

More than just silly stories, both books also directly address problem-solving and the emotions (such as frustration and anxiety) that often accompany working things out with a friend.  For ages 2 to 7.

What’s your favorite book about friendship?  Anybody else a fan of bananas?

I love those books too! Two of my favorite picture books about friendship are Gary and Ray by Sarah Adams and A Splendid Friend Indeed by Suzanne Bloom. Unfortunately, not a single banana in either book.
