Two Bobbies by Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery; illustrated by Jean Cassels

In times of disaster, unexpected bonds are often formed.  Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship, and Survival is a picture book based on the remarkable relationship between Bob Cat and Bobbi, a cat and dog stranded during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The beginning of the book is speculation, relying on observations of other pets left behind and rescued during the evacuation. Several months after the hurricane, the two starving and weary animals meet a sympathetic construction worker.  The true account of their courage and loyalty, along with the moving story of their rescue, begins here.

The text and illustrations are gentle and matter-of-fact and provide an excellent starting point for parents to discuss the consequences of natural disasters with their young children.  However, parents should be aware that some children may be upset by the descriptions of the hurricane and the plight of the two animals.  Recommended for children four and up; adults will also enjoy this moving story.

You can find this book in the Murray Library catalog here.  Children can also download and print a coloring sheet.  Other true accounts of amazing animals include Selvakumar Knew Better and Owen and Mzee.
